a practice for letting go

Happy December! It’s been a YEAR… hasn’t it?!!

Now that we’re in the final stretch of 2025, it's a great time to reflect and clarify what you want to leave behind in 2025… and what you want to carry in to 2026.

This process can feel overwhelming. Sometimes the easiest approach is to start with what’s *no longer* working and what you don’t want to do anymore.

For me, there are things that are no longer working AND there are things that simply don’t light me up anymore. Things that instead feel draining, heavy, and even outdated from where I sit today.

This month is a great time to dredge up those things, bring them into the light, and then consciously and gently discard them. This process can be very cathartic… if you let it be!

Remember that it’s your business and your life, you’re in charge, and you get to stay and what goes.

  • Just because you’ve been doing something for years doesn’t mean you have to continue doing it. (That’s the sunk cost fallacy.)
  • Just because something is “successful” on paper for you doesn’t mean you have to stick with it if it’s not fulfilling at all.
  • And just because your business has worked one way for a long time, doesn’t mean that it can’t work another way!

Consider the fact that what lights you up may be guiding you elsewhere... and that's OK, too. Because what you want and where your heart is guiding you will never lead you astray.

Here’s a practice you can use to bring up what’s ready to be released.

  1. Set the stage. Light a candle, close your door, shut down your laptop, or at least, close all the tabs.
  2. Allow yourself a few moments to just breathe and get comfortable in your body. Allow yourself to bring space into and shake out any parts of your body that are holding on.
  3. Reassure yourself that you will be OK with whatever comes up, that what comes up is for your highest good, and that you are responsible enough to choose what and how you want to handle anything that does.
  4. Gently ask yourself these reflection questions:
    • What parts of my work are ready to be released?
    • What identities of mine are ready to be released?
    • What offers or services am I ready to put to bed, in order to make room for something new?
    • What would I be relieved to never have to do again?
    • What is calling to be revised or updated for the new year?
  5. Journal on your answers to these questions. Get it all out and onto the page. (If you hate journaling, record yourself answering these questions in a voice memo.)
  6. Allow it to sit, on the page or in the voice memo. Leave it be for the next day or week or even month, giving yourself permission to let these things go. If you want to take it a step further (and you're ready), you might even burn the page in symbolic ritual of letting it go.

Next, you’ll learn how to bring in the new. But first, let’s put down the old and clear some space.

Sometimes, it’s not as easy as thinking “I don’t want to do this anymore” and then suddenly you stop doing it. Instead, you can start with bringing gentle awareness to what’s ready to be released, letting it sit out on the cutting room table, and then when you’re ready, gently dissolving it... or even letting it dissolve on its own.

Hi Reader, Last week, I spoke about letting go of what no longer works for us in business, but in life as well. I also offered a practice you can use for letting go. Letting go is the first step that should be done before deciding what you want to bring into the new year. But that’s a topic for next time. Today, we want to look at what is working and what’s not from a business perspective. I believe in prioritizing your instincts and intuition… but also in looking at the data. This means we...

I’ve spoken a lot in the past about fear and how it affects our businesses… specifically the fear of being seen. (I even have a whole course around that!) That’s one of the biggest fears I’ve been working with in my life since … forever. The important thing to remember is that the fear of being seen (or anything else, probably?) can be remedied. I hesitate to say “overcome”, even though, technically we are overcoming it with every step we take. I’ve also spoken about how having trauma or even...

Hi Reader, If you read my last newsletter, I shared that I was closing my Facebook group. Today is, in fact, the last day of the group. As I shared, I'm not doing this because I don’t want community. I’m actually really craving it these days, as are many of us. I’m doing this because Facebook is no longer aligned, so I’m moving on and considering other places to create that community. (As a side note, I just joined BlueSky Social. Also I’m finally making my way to Substack.) But I mentioned...
