The Results are IN: State of the Business

Hi Reader,

The results of my recent survey on the State of the Business are in. Here are the key themes from the survey responses, so you can see how other business owners like you are faring out there.

Results & Key Themes

Business is in a mixed but transitional state.

Most respondents describe their businesses as struggling or steady rather than thriving. Some of you weren’t even in business a year ago, which means a lot of folks here are still in the early growth stage.

The economy is a real factor.

Almost half said the economy has directly impacted them.

Some of the things you reported were:

  • Clients are cautious and delaying decisions.
  • Price sensitivity is high, even for lower-ticket offers.
  • Some of your clients are pausing work until “things get better.”
  • This is creating longer sales cycles and more “wait and see” energy in the market.

🔑 This tells me that we are in a trust-based economy now more than ever. Our clients (and prospective clients) must TRUST us to work with us.

Many are pivoting — and it’s not just offers.

More than 60% of you have made pivots this year, most commonly in your offers, but also in your messaging and marketing. Many of you are experimenting with new ways to serve your audience to adapt to changing client behavior.

🔑 Learning how to pivot (and being willing to try new things) is such an important skill to learn. Flexibility is key!

Client behavior is evolving.

Some of you reported that your clients may be coming in or seeing you less often but wanting and expecting more. They expect deep listening and communication. Many of you report clients who want to do the deeper work.

🔑 Managing client expectations can be challenging, but that means we need to do even better at managing our own energy.

Emotional climate: Cautious but hopeful.

Almost half of you are feeling uncertain about the future, but no one identified as pessimistic. There’s trepidation, but also resilience and a desire to keep going.

🔑 Your own mindset plays such a big role in how your business will weather any storm. Don't discount it!

The results in this survey echoed what I have been noticing in the market, with clients, and in groups.

The bottom line is: The skills required to navigating uncertainty are important ALL the time and especially now.

Because of this, I've been inspired to create a new live workshop: Navigating uncertainty: How to build resilience, manage your mindset, and protect your energy. It's free for group members.

To building resilience,

Hi Reader, If you read my last newsletter, I shared that I was closing my Facebook group. Today is, in fact, the last day of the group. As I shared, I'm not doing this because I don’t want community. I’m actually really craving it these days, as are many of us. I’m doing this because Facebook is no longer aligned, so I’m moving on and considering other places to create that community. (As a side note, I just joined BlueSky Social. Also I’m finally making my way to Substack.) But I mentioned...

I don’t know anyone right now who LOVES social media. Nearly all of my clients either 1) are on social media begrudgingly or 2) aren’t even on it. And I can’t blame them. I haven’t been on Instagram since 2023. It may FEEL like social media is a necessarily evil. But you don’t HAVE to be on it. There are other ways to market your business and other ways to find clients. So if you're thinking of getting off social media, ask yourself these questions: Do you want to be on social media, why or...

If you’re like a lot of people I talk to, you’re actually showing up in your marketing. You’re posting on Instagram. You’re writing emails at least once a month. You’re talking about your business. Yet something just isn’t clicking … I hate to break it to you, but it’s not enough to just show up. So what are you missing? ➡️ STRATEGY. Most new business owners don't understand just how important strategy is to marketing. It’s not enough to have a freebie. You need to have a freebie your ideal...
